Pearls have been the traditional choice for wedding jewellery for many years due to their beauty and luminosity, as well as their symbolism of purity, luck and fidelity.

Pearl Bridal Jewellery

The history of pearl jewellery stretches back well over 2,000 years  when these naturally beautiful gems were first discovered in huge oyster beds.  Pearls soon came to be viewed as the ultimate status symbol by the Romans and in Ancient Greece they were considered to be an important symbol of love, marriage and fidelity.  These ideas have continued throughout history and the pearl reigned supreme as a gem of choice for the wealthy and powerful.  In the Dark Ages it was believed that pearls offered special protection and as such were worn on the battlefields.
By 1890 natural wild, pearl resources had all but been stripped bare but demand continued. The son of a Japanese noodle maker was the first to develop the technique to cultivate pearls.   He developed a method of producing and harvesting beautiful ‘cultured’ pearls and as these were more widely available they were much more affordable.  The cultured pearl is created by the same process but with a little help from the harvesters, whereby irritants are artificially inserted, prompting the pearl production process.  Although freshwater pearls remained highly coveted, cultured pearls meant that the same look was available to the masses.
Natural Pearls
Natural pearls are mainly produced by oysters, and are occasionally found in clams and mussels.  Freshwater pearls can be found all over the world but mainly along the Persian Gulf, along the coasts of India and the Red Sea.  Pearls from China are mainly found in rivers and lakes while Japanese pearls are usually found in salt water. The production of the pearl is a biological process which is the oyster’s way of protecting itself from foreign substances and irritants.  A natural substance called nacre builds up inside the shell around the foreign substances and eventually a pearl is formed.  There is a wide range of colours, hues and natural shapes, but not all pearls are formed well and can be very uneven.  However, the most beautiful pearls have a magical luminescence and lustrous finish making them special and unique for use in creating stunning pieces of pearl jewellery.
